I haven’t bought a new camera for several years. My old one was only 5 megapixel and 3x optical zoom. Compared to what’s available now, that’s terrible! I love taking pictures of my daughter and I kept getting frustrated with blurry pictures and lagging shutter speed. I kept missing those quick little moments that I wanted to capture. We’re going on vacation soon so I wanted to get a better quality camera. I settled on the Canon PowerShot SX20 IS.

This camera isn’t for tossing in your bag and running out the door. I strongly recommend you get fitted for a bag before you even walk out of the store with it. It is a little bigger than the normal digital cameras. The feature that I liked most about this is the 20x optical zoom. This model is 12.1 megapixel and can record HD videos. The shutter speed is pretty impressive too.

I’ve played with the various features and I’m pretty pleased with the results. We went outside at night and took a picture of my house using the nighttime mode. It was great! It didn’t use the flash and it captured what it looked like from standing on the street. My old camera would just show the lights that were on inside and not be able to really tell what you were looking at. I snapped photos on a road trip this weekend. We were going 65mph on the turnpike and my photos came out sharp and perfect. I was asked if we pulled over to take pictures along the way!

If you’re looking for a step-up digital camera, this one is wonderful. I’m looking forward to taking pictures in Puerto Rico in a couple months! You can get the Canon PowerShot SX20 IS at Amazon for $359.
