kids-konserveOver the past few years, I’ve been keeping a mindful eye on waste, and doing what I can to reduce my household’s output of it.  I stopped sending my son to school with a brown-bagged lunch years ago, and instead, he uses the same lunchbox every day.  Besides the obvious waste factor, lunch bags really have their limitations, both in what they can hold and their durability.  That being said, I’m always on the lookout for new lunchboxes a) that my son will like since he has to carry it every day and b) that will stand up to the wear and tear a six year old boy can unleash on it.  Enter Kids Konserve.

The GOOD:  The lunchkit comes with the sack, the stainless steel bottle, a sandwich wrapper, a napkin and two small stainless steel round food containers with lids.  The rope handle on the sack makes it easy to carry and there is enough extra space in the sack that you can easily fit in something extra that’s small, like an apple or banana.

The BAD:  The sack is closed by a Velcro strip and while that may work for pretty, well-coiffed little girls going quietly off to the cafeteria, for a group of rambunctious boys?  Not so much.  Once the sack is closed, there is an open gap on both sides.  An opening that is a little too big, and small things can easily slip out.

MONEY MATTERS:  The Lunch Kit retails for $42.00 and may be purchased online.  The components are all sold separately as well, and there are a variety of colorful unisex prints to choose from.

The MOM VERDICT

Cate says:  I’m a big fan of the Lunch Kit, both in concept and execution, and when it comes to reducing our carbon footprint, I’m there.  The sack’s drawbacks itself (the Velcro closure and the gaps on the side) gave me pause, but the components inside were solid.  I love using the sandwich wrapper instead of a Ziploc bag (another move to reducing waste) and my son loved the stainless steel bottle, particularly the carabiner that was attached to it.  The round containers are the perfect size to put fresh fruit or snacks into.  All the pieces of the sack have gone into regular (heavy) rotation in our house.  Color us big fans of Kids Konserve!

Wow, that’s sort of like a bento box, but better! How awesome. Does it hold enough food for a hungry lil guy?

Thanks for sharing about Kids Konserve! The stainless steel containers are great. I sent their site to my son’s school for a Waste-Free Lunch Challenge.
