What do you write with? As someone who is constantly jotting notes and keeping track of dozens of projects, that’s an important question for me. My writing instrument needs to write smoothly without snagging or blurting ink blobs onto my page.

For years, I have been a fan of pens made by Zebra Pen Corp. So when the company gave us a chance to try a three-color pens from their Zebra Pen Eco Line, I was ready to get writing. The Eco Line is part of Zebra’s Care for Nature campaign, which spreads the word about conserving resources. In fact, these pens are made from at least 70 percent post-consumer waste materials.

The GOOD: This pen writes super smoothly. In fact, it was such a smooth writer that I was taken aback the first few times. And it’s got a very comfortable grip, another big bonus. And it’s easy to switch between colors (have you ever had a pen that wasn’t easy to switch between colors? So, so annoying when that happens).

The BAD: It’s nice to have a pen that has wow factor at first glance. This isn’t that. But it is a great utility piece.

MONEY MATTERS: The Zebra Eco Clip-On 3-Color Pen retails for under $3. It’s available at various retail stores including Staples, Office Max, Wal-Mart and K-Mart.

The MOM VERDICT

Sarah says: When this pen arrived, I immediately used it to write a check to my son’s school. It was a quick and pleasant experience. Seriously. I really liked this pen. It writes so flawlessly and feels perfect in the hand. I’ve been using it religiously ever since.

Cate says: I love tri-color pens and, to tell you the truth, I kind of forgot they even existed.  As soon as I saw it, it instantly brought me back to my school days, days of lockers slamming, lunchroom chattering and homework.  Lots and lots of homework.  When my son saw it on my desk, he asked what it was.  I explained that it was one pen that had three different colors in it.  He was very oohing and aahing over it, and I think, I think I might have lost writing privileges with it.  Already.  But luckily I got to try it out first.  Each color writes really smoothly, not a skip in the ink to be seen.  It doesn’t leak and withstands even the rigors of a six-year-old bandying it about.  Love the pen, and thanks to Zebra for bringing me back a few years to some good memories.  “The olden days,” as I told my son.  But now that he has squired it away, a whole new generation of tri-color pen lovers has been born.

I haven’t seen a multi-color pen in quite awhile! It certainly takes me back to H.S. as well!
