If there is one thing that I’ve learned from Cate, it’s that sometimes you have to keep the change going (although, she admittedly isn’t fond of change per se). That point was abundantly clear when my kids and I recently found ourselves in a reading rut. We need a book every evening before bedtime. And my son, bless his heart, has some big favorites. Namely Green Eggs and Ham.

So when I saw that Cate and her son Nicholas were doing a 100 Book Challenge, I knew it was time to put the eggs aside and make our way through some new, exciting stories. As it turns out, Will embraced the change.

One of the books to make it into our new repertoire was I Get Around. The board book follows a dog as he flies, skis and more.

The GOOD: This durable board book is visually pleasing. Even the words are designed. The mix of line drawings and full-color illustrations is a nice change-up from standard board book fare. The words and storyline are simple enough for even the youngest kids to follow and understand.

The BAD: There is one point, early in the book, where the words are written upside down because the dog is upside down. While I understand the reasoning for it, for beginning readers, this can be confusing.

MONEY MATTERS: I Get Around retails for $11 and is available on Amazon.

SOMETHING EXTRA: This book is part of a series of products. Check out the I Get Around website for other great products. And see what author Deb Miner is up to on her I Get Around blog.

The MOM VERDICT

Sarah says: Overall, I loved this book. It’s colorful and fun and fast-paced. More importantly, both my three-year-old son and one-year-old daughter enjoy the story. And that is the key for a good, worthwhile read in my house. This would make a great present for the young child in your life.

My kids love this book too, especially the fun, unexpected rhymes and happy, goofy Rover faces. (My kids are a little older and actually look forward to the “upside down words” part :).
