The concept of breakfast cereal conjures up images of too-sweetened, hypercolored shapes in boxes adorned with the latest and greatest kid’s idol. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Nature’s Path makes a line of children’s cereals under the EnviroKidz brand name that is low in sugar and made with whole grains.
There are two new EnviroKidz cereals hitting the shelves these days: Leapin’ Lemurs, which is a mix of peanut butter and chocolate balls, and Penguin Puffs, which is made of kamut, quinoa and corn. Nature’s Path was nice enough to let me sample both.
The GOOD: Both cereals are organic, healthy and made with non-GMO ingredients. They are also free from artificial flavor, color and preservatives. Each box has an animal on it for kids to learn about and one percent of the sales profits are donated to animal preservation organizations each year. The Leapin’ Lemurs are a great dry cereal for little hands to eat out of a cup.
The BAD: The Penguin Puffs were a little too small for our dry cereal-eating family.
MONEY MATTERS: At about $3.50 a box, the price isn’t significantly different than other cereals.
The MOM VERDICT
Sarah says: I am really glad to have tried the EnviroKidz line of cereals. Although the Penguin Puffs probably won’t make it into our rotation, the Leapin’ Lemurs were an instant favorite. My husband said that they remind him a lot of Kix, a favorite of his. I will have to investigate the other varieties of cereal for something for my 10-month-old daughter. The shape of the Leapin’ Lemurs would be perfect, if not for the peanut butter element (children under age 1 shouldn’t have peanut products).
